Situated in the Pannonian Plain and the Balkans, Serbia—officially known as the Republic of Serbia—is a landlocked nation at the intersection of Southeast and Central Europe. In addition to North Macedonia to the south, it shares borders with Romania to the northeast, Bulgaria to the southeast, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west, and Montenegro to the southwest. Its northern boundary is with Hungary. Serbia asserts that the disputed territory of Kosovo forms part of its border with Albania. 6.6 million people live in Serbia, not counting Kosovo. Belgrade, the capital, is also the biggest city.
