One of Sri Lanka’s largest cities, Kandy, is situated in the Central Province. From 1469 to 1818, it served as the final capital of the Sinhalese kingdom, which was a part of the Kingdom of Kandy. Situated amidst rolling hills on the Kandy plateau, the city spans a region of tropical plantations, primarily cultivating tea. The capital of the Central Province, Kandy serves as both an administrative and a religious center. One of the holiest sites of worship in the Buddhist world, the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is located in Kandy. In 1988, UNESCO designated it as a World Heritage Site.[2] In the past, Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial development and occupation were opposed by the local Buddhist kings.
