One of Sri Lanka’s nine provinces, or the country’s first administrative division, is the Western Province. Although the provinces have existed since the 19th century, they lacked legal standing until 1987, when provincial councils were established by the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution.[4][5] The most populous province in the nation, Western Province is home to Colombo, the administrative and commercial hub of the country, as well as Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the legislative capital.
