Taiwan’s capital, or technically Taipei City, is both a special municipality and the country’s capital[a]. Taipei City, an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City, is situated in Northern Taiwan, roughly 25 km (16 km) southwest of Keelung, the northern port city. Over half of the city is situated on the Taipei Basin, an old lakebed. The basin is enclosed by the relatively small valleys of the Xindian and Keelung rivers, which converge to form the Tamsui River on the western edge of the city.
