California is a state located on the Pacific Coast of the United States in the West. It shares borders with the Mexican state of Baja California to the south, Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east, and so on. It is the most populated subnational entity in North America, the most populous U.S. state, and has 39 million residents spread over an area of 163,696 square miles (423,970 km2). With 19 million and 10 million people, respectively, the Greater Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas rank second and fifth in terms of population among urban areas in the country. After New York, Los Angeles is the most populated city in the state and the country. Sacramento, the capital of California, is situated in the Central Valley.
