Vietnam’s second-most populous city and capital is Hanoi. The translation of the term “Hanoi” is “inside the river,” since Hanoi is surrounded by the Black and Red Rivers. Hanoi is a municipality made up of one district-level town, twelve urban districts, and seventeen rural districts. 8,587,100 people called the 3,359.84 km2 (1,297.24 sq mi) metropolis home as of 2023. After Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi had the second-highest gross regional domestic product (51.4 billion USD) among all Vietnamese provinces and municipalities in 2022.
