Formerly known as Salisbury, Harare is Zimbabwe’s largest and capital city. With a population of 1,849,600 as of the 2022 census and an anticipated 2,487,209 in its metropolitan province, the city proper has an area of 982.3 km2 (379.3 sq mi). The city is located in the Mashonaland region of northeastern Zimbabwe. The municipalities of Chitungwiza and Epworth are included in the metropolitan province of Harare. The city is located on a plateau 1,483 meters (4,865 feet) above sea level, and it experiences subtropical highland climates.
