The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is a federal territory of Australia. Prior to 1938, it was known as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The primate city of the territory is Canberra, the capital city of Australia, which is located there. Situated entirely within the state of New South Wales, it is an enclave in the southeast of the Australian continent. All significant Australian government institutions have their headquarters in this area, which was established as the country’s seat of government following Federation.
