Australia’s east coast holds the state of New South Wales, or NSW as it is frequently abbreviated. It shares boundaries with South Australia to the west, Victoria to the south, and Queensland to the north. To the east of its coast are the Tasman and Coral Seas. Within the state are enclaves known as the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory. Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populated city in Australia. With a population of nearly 8.3 million as of December 2023, New South Wales is the most populous state in Australia. 5.3 million people, or about two thirds of the state’s total population, reside in the Greater Sydney area.
