Australia’s island state is called Tasmania. The Bass Strait divides it from the Australian continent, which is situated 240 kilometers (150 miles) to the south. Hobart is the capital and largest city of the state, and the Greater Hobart area is home to almost 40% of the population. With the least amount of its citizens residing in the state capital, Tasmania is the most decentralized state in Australia.
