Slovakia Officially known as the Slovak Republic (Slovak: Slovenská republika [ˈslɔŋenskaː ˈrepublika]), Slovak: Slovensko [ˈslɔŋenskɔ]  is a landlocked nation in Central Europe. Hungary to the south, Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, and the Czech Republic to the northwest are its borders. Slovakia has a population of more than 5.4 million people living within its 49,000 square kilometres (19,000 sq mi) of primarily mountainous area. Bratislava is the capital and largest city; Košice is the second largest.
