China’s capital, Beijing, was formerly romanized as Peking. Beijing is China’s second-largest metropolis after Shanghai and the most populous national capital in the world, home to over 22 million people. With sixteen urban, suburban, and rural districts, it is a municipality in Northern China that is directly run by the State Council. With the exception of nearby Tianjin to the southeast, Hebei Province encircles Beijing primarily; the three divisions combined make up the Jingjinji megalopolis and China’s national capital region.
