North of the Sinai Peninsula, south of the Anatolian Peninsula, and west of the Levant, lies the island nation of Cyprus, formally known as the Republic of Cyprus. Though it is technically a part of West Asia, its geopolitics and cultural connections are primarily Southeast European. The Mediterranean’s third-largest and third-most populated island is Cyprus. It lies west of Lebanon and Syria, north of Egypt, south of Turkey, and east of Greece. Nicosia is its largest and capital city. The self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus de facto governs the northeastern part of the island.
