Meaning and Origin
The term “Jorhat” refers to two hats or mandis, “Masorhaat” and “Sowkihat,” which were situated on opposite banks of the Bhugdoi river. “Jor” means twin, and “hat” means market.

The Ahoms had at least 37 years with Jorhat as their capital. This village was founded next to the Dichoi River, and since other markets, including Phukanar Hat and Mashar Hat, were established nearby, the area became known as Jorhat (twin-market).
