The town of Kokrajhar is located in the autonomous region of Bodoland Territorial Region, which is part of Assam, one of the northeastern states of India.

The settlement of Kokrajhar is situated beside the Gaurang River. The city is divided into the north and south Kokrajhar divisions by the North East Indian Railways. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and Kokrajhar district are headquartered at Kokrajhar town.

The terms “Kok” and “rajhar” combine to form “Kokrajhar.” Koch is referred to as Kok, King as Rajhar, and Koch-King as Kokrajhar.
