Meaning and Origin
Nal and bari are the roots of the word Nalbari. Bari is a word meaning “enclosed ground with plantation,” whereas nal is a type of reed.[Reference required]

Nalbari’s history extends over several centuries. Nalbari is the source of certain economic products that are imported, according to B.C. Arthashastra of Kautilya.The best silk of Kautilya’s era was made in the Suvarnakundya village, which is close to Nalbari town. The region was also known for producing a unique aroma. Products from Chandan and Aguru were widely exported, even to northern India. Until the pre-modern era, Western Assam was referred to as Kamarupa, or the Kamapitha division.
