The town of Sherghati is located in Bihar, India’s Gaya district (formerly known as Magadha). It is bordered by the Morhar River. On August 25, 1865, a meteorite from Mars fell here; it is now known as the Shergotty meteorite and is housed in a museum in London.
Sherghati was ruled by the Chero, but in 1700 it was taken over by Azam Khan, the ruler of the Rohilla tribe. Raja Jehangir Bux Khan rose up in rebellion against the British in 1857.
