In the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, Ambikapur serves as both the city and the district headquarters of Surguja. Located in east central India, it is among the state’s oldest cities. The Surguja Division, comprising the six districts of Surguja, Korea, Manendragarh, Balrampur, Surajpur, and Jashpur, also has its divisional headquarters in Ambikapur.

Prior to Indian Independence, Ambikapur served as the capital of the princely state of Surguja. The city’s name comes from the name of the Hindu deity Ambika (Mahamaya) Devi.
