One of the three districts that make up the Indian union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli is the Diu district. Diu Island and two tiny enclaves in the State of Gujarat comprise the district. The district office is located in Diu Town. Out of 640 districts nationwide, this one has the ninth-lowest population.

When Gujarati Sultan Bahadur Shah asked the Portuguese for assistance in fending off an attack by Humayun, the second Moghal ruler, the Portuguese erected the Diu Fortress in 1535.
In the past, the district belonged to Gujarat’s Saurashtra region.
