The first of Islam’s two official holidays is Eid al-Fitr. Celebrated during the first three days of Shawwāl, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar (though it can happen in any season of the year due to the Muslim usage of a lunar calendar), Eid al-Fitr signifies the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. Similar to Eid al-Adha, another holy festival in Islam, it is identified by the community prayer (ṣalāt) held on the first day at dawn. Eid al-Fitr is a time for formal gatherings as well as intimate visits, during which friends greet one another, exchange gifts, put on new attire, and pay respects to departed loved ones’ graves.
