One of the major Hindu holidays, Ugadi is observed with considerable ceremony and splendor. Ugadi is observed by the Telugu and Kannada communities as their New Year. Not only do Hindus celebrate it, but so do Sindhis and Maharashtrians. In different states, the celebration is referred to by different names. The people of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Sindhi refer to it as “Ugadi,” whereas the people of Maharashtra call it “Gudi Padwa.” Every state observes this holiday in a different way.

How is the celebration of the festival conducted?
Every year in April, people celebrate the celebration of Ugadi. Everybody in the state gets together on this day to celebrate and have a great time as a group. The lunisolar calendar determines when the festival takes place. The people greet the first day of the New Year with immense happiness and festivities. It is said that happiness on the first day of the new year will carry over into the remainder of the year. Everyone celebrates the first day of the year with great joy at this festival. In addition, they make a special meal called “Ugadi Pachadi” for friends and family and dress in brand-new, traditional attire.
