In the Indian state of Goa, the town of Quepem (Kepem) has a municipal council and is located in the South Goa region. The town serves as the Quepem taluka’s (sub-district) administrative center.
Past Events
Five years after the Portuguese had conquered the Quepem sub-district, the town was founded in 1787 by Deão Jose Paulo de Almeida, the dean (Deão) of the church, a Portuguese nobleman. He constructed his renowned Palácio do Deão, as well as a public market, hospital, chapel, and other amenities at his own money for the benefit of the locals. Later on, D. Manuel Francisco Zacarias de Portugal e Castro, the viceroy at the time, gave him the unofficial title of Barão de Quepem.
