With 5,570,585 residents (as of the 2011 population census), Ahmedabad is the fifth most populous city in India. The encompassing metropolitan agglomeration has an estimated 6,357,693 residents, making it the seventh most populated city overall. Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat and dubbed its twin city, is located 25 km (16 mi) away from Ahmedabad, which is situated close to the banks of the Sabarmati River.
