On August 15, 1995, Panchkula district was established as the 17th district of the Indian state of Haryana. Panchkula and Kalka are its two tehsils and two sub divisions. According to the 1991 census, it had 264 villages, of which 12 are deserted and ten were completely amalgamated with towns or treated as census towns. The district consists of the following five towns: Raipur Rani, Barwala, Raipur Kalka, Panchkula, and Pinjore. There are 319,398 people living in the district overall, with 145,841 women and 173,557 men.

It was the least populous district in Haryana at the time of the 2011 Indian Census.

The district’s headquarters are located in Panchkula city. This district is home to Chandimandir Cantonment, which is next to the Panchkula Urban Estat
