Situated on the western coast of India, Mangalore, sometimes referred to as Mangaluru, is a prominent industrial port city in the state of Karnataka. It is situated roughly 352 kilometers (219 mi) west of Bangalore, the state capital, 14 km north of the Karnataka–Kerala border, and 297 km south of Goa, between the Laccadive Sea and the Western Ghats. The only city in the state with access to all four forms of transportation is Mangalore: air, land, rail, and sea. As per the 2011 Indian national census, the urban agglomeration has a population of 619,664. It is well-known for housing some of India’s strategically important petroleum reserves.
