Named after the Kochi city division of the same name, Ernakulam is one of the state’s fourteen districts in India. Situated in the state’s center, it covers an area of around 2,924 square kilometers (1,129 square miles) and is home to more than 9% of Kerala’s total population. Its main office is situated in Kakkanad. The district includes Kochi, which is renowned for its historic churches, Hindu temples, synagogues, and mosques. Kochi is often referred to as Kerala’s commercial hub.
