The town and municipality of Kottarakkara, also known as Kottarakara, is located in Kerala, India’s Kollam district. Kottarakkara is located 27 kilometers (17 mi) east of the center of Kollam.

Past Events

Kottarakkara was a principality ruled by a branch of the Travancore Royal Family, also referred to as the Elayadathu Swarupam in the days of the kings. It is the birthplace of the well-known dance drama Kathakali, which was first developed as Ramanattam in the 17th century by Prince Kottarakkara Thampuran. Later, under the patronage of the Kottarakkara Raja, it absorbed additional Krishnanattam dance forms and underwent further innovations.
