One of the three island subgroups that make up the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India, is the Laccadive Islands. It is the middle subgroup of the Lakshadweep, divided by the 9 Degree or Mamala Channel, which is located far to the south, and the approximate 11th parallel north from the Amindivi Islands subgroup.
Prior to 1973, the Union Territory of Lakshadweep was known as Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands; however, an act of Parliament altered this name to Lakshadweep.
