The Indreshwar Temple in the city inspired the original name of the city, Indreshwar. The oldest temple in Indore is called Indreshwara Temple, and it is thought to have been named after the Rashtrakuta ruler Indra III from the tenth century. Subedar Malhar Rao, who lived in Indore during the period when it was a commercial post and a camp for guerrilla activity, renovated the Shiva temple in 1741. The previous name was not to be abandoned, notwithstanding Malhar Rao’s attempts to legitimize the city as Malharnagari. The Juni Indur arrived, and Indore got its name from this temple.
