The Mizo terms “ai,” which means “cardamom,” and “zawl,” which means “flatland” or “plain,” are combined to form the word “Aizawl.” Thus, “Aizawl” could be loosely translated as “the cardamom field.” This name could be significant historically or relate to the pre-urban features of the area.
