Northeastern Indian state of Sikkim has its capital city, Gangtok. It is located in the southeast-central region of the state at an elevation of roughly 5,600 feet (1,700 meters), on a tributary of the Tista River.

The name of the city translates to “Hilltop.” Gangtok is situated atop hillsides that are heavily planted with maize. Up until the monarchy was overthrown in 1975 and Sikkim was seized by India in 1976, it served as the kingdom of Sikkim’s seat of government. Indians, Lepchas, Tibetans, and Nepalese make up the city’s population. The administrative consolidation of several neighboring communities under the Gangtok Municipal Corporation at the beginning of the twenty-first century has expanded both the city’s area and population.
