In the Thiruvanamalai district of Tamil Nadu, India, Aarani—officially spelled Arni and commonly known as Periya Aarani—is a significant center for commerce, industry, and culture. It also serves as a divisional headquarters. Administered by a selection grade municipality, the town is the second largest urban center after Thiruvannamalai, the district capital. Spinning mills, silk weaving, and agriculture are all located in Aarani. Aarani is the source of the well-known Aarani silk and the aromatic Aarani Ponni paddy variety. The town is frequently referred to as “The Silk City.” Because Aarani is a significant Tamil Jain center, it also has a rich cultural legacy.
