One of the 38 districts that make up the state of Tamil Nadu in southeast India is Madurai district. The district headquarters are located in Madurai. On the banks of the Vaigai River, it is home to the renowned Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple. In the district, Thiruparankundram is a popular tourist destination. The district had 3,038,252 residents as of 2011, with 990 females for every 1,000 males. The largest towns are Melur, Vadipatti, Thirumangalam, Thirupparankundram, Peraiyur, and Usilampatti, in addition to Madurai. It serves as a major hub for different film productions. Jallikattu is mostly practiced in the districts of Alanganallur, Palamedu, and Avaniyapuram.
