Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India, has 38 districts, including the Nilgiris district. A range of mountains that are dispersed along the borders of the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala is known as the Nilgiri (English: Blue Mountains). The Western Ghats are a broader mountain range that includes the Nilgiri Hills. The 2,637-meter-tall Doddabetta mountain is their highest point. The Nilgiri Mountain range contains the majority of the district. The administrative center is situated in Ooty, also known as Udhagamandalam or Ootacamund. The district is bordered to the south by Coimbatore, to the east by Erode, and to the north by the districts of Wayanad in Kerala and Chamarajnagar in Karnataka.
