One of the 38 districts of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu is Salem District. Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Namakkal are the three separate districts that now make up the district. The district’s principal towns are Mettur, Tharamangalam, Thammampatti, Attur, Omalur, Sangagiri, and Edappadi. The district headquarters is located in Salem. The discovery by Koneripatti of Salem in 1987 of silver coins from the Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (37–68 CE) indicates that Salem dates back at least two millennia.
