The Indian state of Uttarakhand is situated in the northwest of the nation. The Tibetan Autonomous Region of China borders it to the northeast, Nepal to the southeast, the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh to the south and southwest, and the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to the northwest. The 27th state of India, Uttaranchal, was created on November 9, 2000, when Uttar Pradesh was divided into two states.
