The largest city in Kumaon is Haldwani (Haldvānī in Kumaoni. In the Indian state of Uttarakhand, it is also the most populous city and major commercial market. With the highest concentration of commercial, industrial, and economic activity in the state, Haldwani is considered the financial center of Uttarakhand. One of the eight subdivisions of the Nainital District is called Haldwani. With 232,060 residents as of 2011, the Haldwani Urban Agglomeration is Uttarakhand’s third-most populous UA, behind Dehradun and Haridwar. The Kathgodam area in Haldwani, which is located in the immediate foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas, is referred to as the “Gateway to Kumaon”.
