Kolkata, with an estimated 4.5 million people living in the city proper (0.45 crore), is the sixth most populated city in India. With a population of more than 15 million (1.5 crore), it serves as the hub of the Kolkata Metropolitan Region, one of the most populated metropolitan areas in the world. Many sources consider Kolkata to be India’s cultural capital and a historically and culturally important city.
