A geographical area on Honshu, the largest island in Japan, is known as the Kantō region. The Greater Tokyo Area and the following seven prefectures are included in a common definition of the region: Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba, and Kanagawa. The Kantō Plain makes up somewhat more than 45% of the total land area inside its borders. The hills and mountains that define Japan’s land borders with other regions make up the remaining area.
