Central Europe contains the nation of Poland. Split into sixteen voivodeships, Poland is the seventh largest EU nation, with a total size of 312,696 km2 (120,733 sq mi), and the fifth most populous member state, with over 38 million inhabitants. It borders seven nations as it stretches from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Sudetes and Carpathian Mountains in the south.[g] The region is distinguished by a diversified topography, a range of ecosystems, and a mild transitional climate.
