Situated at the intersection of Central, Eastern, and Southeast Europe is the nation of Romania[a]. It shares boundaries with the Black Sea to the southeast, Moldova to the east, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, and Ukraine to the north and east. With a population of 19 million, it has an area of 238,397 km³ (92,046 sq mi) with a primarily continental climate (2023). Romania is the sixth most populous member state of the European Union and the twelfth largest nation in Europe. Bucharest is its capital and largest city; other cities in the country include Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Iasi, Timișoara, Constanța, Craiova, and Galaţi.
