The state of New Jersey is located in both the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Situated in the heart of the Northeast megalopolis, it is the most densely inhabited of all 50 U.S. states. New Jersey shares borders with New York State to the north and east, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, southeast, and south, the Delaware River and Pennsylvania to the west, and Delaware Bay and Delaware to the southwest. New Jersey is the fifth-smallest state in terms of land size, measuring 7,354 square miles (19,050 km2), yet it ranks 11th in terms of population, with about 9.3 million people living there as of the 2020 US census—its largest decennial count ever.
