South America’s Uruguay is formally known as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. Its borders are shared by Brazil to the north and northeast, Argentina to the west and southwest, the Río de la Plata to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. It is located in South America’s Southern Cone region. The total area of Uruguay is roughly 176,215 square kilometers (68,037 square miles). Its population is estimated to be 3.4 million, of which over 2 million reside in the Montevideo metropolitan region, which is home to the country’s main city.
